How to Maximize Every Camp
Before the Camp
- Email the coaching staff 1 week before (use the camp template from Coach Contact page)
- Research the coaches — know their names and what they coach
- Pack: full catching gear, bat, cleats, batting gloves, extra hair ties, water, snacks
- Get a good night's sleep. Eat a proper breakfast.
- Print 10-15 copies of your player profile
During the Camp
- Arrive 15-20 min early. First impression matters.
- Introduce yourself: "Hi Coach [Name], I'm Charlie Holladay, I emailed you about attending today."
- Listen and implement feedback IMMEDIATELY. Coaches watch coachability.
- Go 100% on every rep. Even warmups. Coaches are ALWAYS watching.
- Be vocal. As a catcher — communicate, call balls, direct traffic, lead.
- Cheer for others. Be a great teammate. Energy and attitude matter.
After the Camp
- Thank every coach personally before leaving. Handshake, eye contact.
- Send a thank-you email within 24 hours.
- Write down feedback — what did coaches say? What to work on?
- Post on social media: "Great day at [School] camp! Thank you @[handle]!"
What Coaches Evaluate at Camps
- Coachability — Do you listen and adjust? (#1 factor)
- Attitude/Energy — Positive, competitive, team-first
- Mechanics — Catching: receiving, framing, blocking, footwork
- Arm strength — Pop time, throw accuracy
- Bat — Swing mechanics, approach, bat speed
- Speed — Home-to-first, baserunning instincts
- Recovery — How you handle mistakes. Shake it off or dwell?
Types of Camps — Know the Difference
| Camp Type | What It Is | Cost | Recruiting Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| College Prospect/Elite Camp | Hosted by a college's coaching staff ON their campus. Skills stations + evaluation. This is the gold standard. | $75-300 | HIGHEST — Basically an audition. |
| Position-Specific Camp (P/C) | Focused on catchers (and pitchers). Smaller group, more individual attention on position skills. | $100-250 | HIGHEST for catchers — Coaches evaluate catching skills up close. |
| Multi-Day Summer Camp | 3-4 day camp. More instruction, more reps, deeper evaluation. Alabama's is this type. | $300-500 | Very High — Extended time = coaches really get to know you. |
| Skills Clinic | Shorter (2-3 hrs). Focused on instruction. Less formal evaluation. | $50-150 | Medium — Great for improvement + coaches still notice standouts. |
| Third-Party Showcase | Run by orgs like Softball Factory, NCSA. College coaches may or may not attend. | $200-500+ | Varies — Research coach attendance before paying. |
